Designing a Dorm Room for Boys: A Mom’s Perspective (and an Interior Designer’s)

This year, I'm experiencing something new, not just as an interior designer, but as a mom.

My oldest son is heading off to college, and like so many parents, we've been checking off the seemingly endless list of things he needs before move-in day. It's an exciting season, filled with anticipation, a little nostalgia, and more shopping trips than I ever imagined.

As I've planned his dorm room, I've realized something; designing a space for boys is very different from designing one for girls. My son will be sharing a room with two other boys, which means every square inch matters. When three young men are living together in one small space, organization, functionality, and smart storage quickly become the priorities.

Boys Pack Differently

One of the first things I noticed is that boys generally don't bring nearly as many clothes.Their wardrobe is usually pretty simple: t-shirts, athletic wear, hoodies, jeans, and maybe one outfit for presentations or special occasions. What they do bring is gear: gaming consoles, monitors, controllers, headphones, sports equipment, power cords, protein shakers, and fans.

And if they're engineering students, like my son, you can add calculators, tools, project supplies, and enough technology to fill another suitcase.

The challenge isn't finding room for clothes; it's finding a place for everything else.

Organization Makes All the Difference

When three boys share one room, clutter can happen quickly and I mean tornado quickly. The easiest way to keep the room functional is to give everything a designated place. Think under-bed storage bins, drawer organizers, bedside caddies, over-the-door hooks, storage carts, and vertical shelving whenever possible. A well-organized room doesn't just look better; it makes everyday life easier, especially during a busy semester.

The Things Parents Know...

Let's be honest. Most boys don't need reminders to charge their gaming console. They do need reminders to:

  • Wash their sheets
  • Change their pillowcase
  • Do laundry before they're out of socks
  • Empty the trash
  • Clean out the mini fridge
  • Pick towels up off the floor
  • Dust every once in a while

If you're a parent reading this, you're probably smiling because you've had at least one of these conversations.

Simple systems can make these habits easier. A laundry hamper that's easy to reach, a conveniently placed trash can, and storage that's quick to access all help make staying organized a little less overwhelming.

Comfort Still Matters

A dorm room is much more than a place to sleep.

It's where students study for exams, unwind after long days, play games with friends, video chat with family, and sometimes spend an entire rainy weekend.

Comfortable bedding, good lighting, practical storage, and a few personal touches can make even the smallest room feel a little more like home.

My Dorm Essentials for Boys

After weeks of researching, shopping, and planning, these are the items that made the top of my list:

  • Extra-cushioned mattress topper
  • Twin XL sheets
  • Comfortable pillows and pillowcases
  • Lightweight, machine-washable comforter
  • Laundry hamper
  • Under-bed storage bins
  • Two surge-protected power strips
  • Command Hooks
  • Desk lamp
  • Storage drawers
  • Small fan
  • Air purifier (especially when three boys share one room!)
  • Area rug
  • First aid kit
  • Lysol wipes
  • Small bottle of dish soap and a sponge
  • Laundry detergent pods
  • Shower caddy and shower shoes
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Headphones
  • Basic tool kit (especially for engineering students)
  • Laptop or computer
  • Storage for gaming accessories, if needed

A New Chapter

As an interior designer, I love creating homes that make people excited to walk through the front door. As the mom of a college-bound son, I've learned that most boys have a different goal.

They aren't looking for a perfectly designed room. They want a space that's comfortable, functional, and easy to live in. A place to study, relax, spend time with friends, and keep everything they need within reach.

The room doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to feel like home.
