Why I Don’t Decorate for Holidays

This is not about overlooking the holidays, the spirit of the season, or everything that makes this time of year special—especially gathering with friends and family. And I am certainly not suggesting that you skip the holiday décor. I love the traditions and beauty that come with the season.

What I do not believe in is waiting for the holidays to suddenly “spruce up” your home.

Why should the best china only come out for a special occasion? Why should the formal dining room sit untouched until guests arrive? Why do we suddenly add fresh flowers, light the candles, set the table, and make our homes feel beautiful only a few times a year?

Your home is where everyday life happens. It is where you gather with the people you love, share meals, have conversations, and create memories. Those ordinary days deserve beautiful surroundings, too.

Use the dining room on a Tuesday. Bring out the china you love. Put fresh flowers in a vase simply because they make you happy. Light the candles at dinner. Sit in the room that usually waits for company. Enjoy the pieces you carefully chose instead of saving them for “someday.”

I believe a well-designed home should not just look beautiful when you are entertaining. It should encourage you to enjoy the way you live every day.

When you cherish your spaces, use the things you love, and make even the simplest moments feel a little more special, you do not have to wait for the holidays to celebrate your home.

In a way, every day can feel a little like a holiday.
