Unveiling the art of interior transformation
Are you like most people who take into account thread count for sheets but have no idea the difference between percale and sateen? It’s not your fault. Thread count (quantity) has been the center of attention for so long that it overshadowed everything else (construction & quality).
Percale and sateen refers to how sheets are woven (construction). Percale sheets are a plain weave and is known by its matte finish. The weave is tight and is characterized by how the vertical and horizontal threads are woven one at a time (one-over-one-under). The thread count is the same vertically and horizontally, producing a strong fabric and making the sheets feel the same on either side. Percale fabric is often lighter in weight and is great for warmer climates and/or people who tend to run “hot” at night. These sheets get softer with each wash while still maintaining a crisp feel, like a dress shirt.
Sateen sheets are known for being silky and having a sheen. This is because the weave is different (one thread under, three threads over), which exposes more of the threads surface. This creates the satiny finish and drapes heavier than percale. Sateen sheets are great for cooler climates and/or people who tend to be cold at night. They mellow with washing and are less likely to wrinkle than their percale counterparts.
To summarize, Percale is matte, crisp, and stays cool to the touch while Sateen is shiny, silky, and warms to the touch. Now you can determine the right type of sheets for a good night’s sleep. Sweet dreams!
